Unit 34

Second Grade Segments

~~~~~~~~~
Heart of Dakota - Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory - Unit 34
~~~~~~~~~

Bible Verse:

~~~~~~~~~
Bible Study:
Philippians 3:12-4:1
We studied this for almost an hour today.  We also talked about salvation.  Even though T prayed to our Heavenly Father several years ago about being a child of His, she prayed again today.  She told God she is a sinner and that she was sorry.  She asked him to remove all the sin out of her body and help her to never sin again. She said she believes Jesus died for her and wants to live for Him.  It was so sweet!  Praise the Lord!
T told me she was always going to remember Paul's wise words and listen to what he said about keeping our mind toward the prize of Heaven.
History:
We studied the Transcontinental Railroad.  The Irish and Chinese worked on the railroad.  They would have races to see who could lay the most rail in one day.  The Chinese could lay 10 miles of tracks in one day!  The last spike driven into the railroad was made of pure gold!
(Click the picture above to read more about the gold spike.)
We also finished our timeline! :) (not pictured)
~~~~~~~~~

Reading:
T finished The Courage of Sarah Noble.
~~~~~~~~~
Science:
We learned that molecules move faster in hot water than in cold water.
~~~

We also learned about the layers of the earth.
This is what T had to say:

"I think God made the earth's core so hot so when He destroys the earth, it will just burn through to the crust. I really think He was smart to do that."

~~~
We learned about igneus, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
T went hunting for rocks outside.  This is what she found:
~~~

Big brother let us look at his rocks.  We used some of them to categorize our rocks.

~~~~~~~~~
Math:
We finished 2nd grade math and did a couple of worksheets in 3rd from Math Mammoth.
~~~~~~~~~

Artistic Expression:

We were supposed to paint clouds with milk paint, but didn't get that accomplished.  T did some other things with play doh.  This bouquet was one of them:

~~~~~~~~~
Storytime:
Momma is STILL reading Follow My Leader and is a little over half-way through.  We will finish this book over the next couple of weeks.
~~~~~~~~~

Poetry/Copywork:

Our poem was Try Again by William Hickson.  When I searched for this poem online, it wasn't written the same. :/  T did a beautiful job with her copywork this week, but I didn't get a chance to take a picture.

~~~~~~~~~
I cannot believe the year has ended!  What fun we had!  We feel so blessed to have found the Heart of Dakota curriculum and look forward to a new year.  Our Third Grade Grub will consist mainly of Bigger Hearts for His Glory and we hope to begin around the middle of July.  We hope you all have a wonderful summer!
Unit 33
Second Grade Segments
~~~~~~~~~

Heart of Dakota -Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory- Unit 33

~~~~~~~~~
Awana is over for the year. :(
Bible verse:
Proverbs 17:22
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.
T and B both did really well with this verse!
Bible Study:
Philippians 2:3-15
Paul tells us that we shouldn't be selfish.  He tells us we need to esteem others better than ourselves.  We should look to Jesus as our example of how to act.  We should do all things without complaining or arguing so we may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation.  We should shine our lights in the world!
~~~~~~~~~

History:

We read about pioneers from Norway that settled on the plains.  We learned about the sod houses they lived in, what life was like on the plains and how different it was from the life in Norway.

Geography:

We found Europe on the globe, and Norway.  We traced the route settlers would have taken to get from Norway to the Great Plains.  I was happy that T remembered the plains were flat lands before the mountains and easily found them on the globe. :)

We also added to our timeline:

~~~~~~~~~
Math:
We learned to add and subtract in the 10,000's place, to divide rectangles and squares in half, and reviewed the minuend, subtrahend and difference in subtraction.   We also had lots of review.
~~~~~~~~~

Artistic Expression:

We made snowflakes this week to represent Winter in a sod house.

More Art from the week, unrelated to HOD.

~~~~~~~~~
Spelling:
Number words
~~~~~~~~~

Reading:

T read 5 more chapters of this book.

~~~~~~~~
Storytime:
We are still reading Follow My Leader because Mommy is slow.
~~~~~~~~~

Science:

God made the soil!  God made the plants!

We learned a lot about different types of soil.

 We also learned the parts of a seed.  We let some seeds soak for a couple of days and dissected them into their three parts:  seed case, new plant, food sack

Bug also enjoyed this!

We also planted a few beans in a cup on Friday, but it will take a few days to see any action. :)  Update:  I and E both had a cup with beans in them.  Mommy let them where the Scrump could reach, so we lost our beans. :(

~~~~~~~~~
PE:
We use our exercise cards, but T also has soccer practice twice a week and a game every Saturday.
~~~~~~~~~

One unit to go!  We are super excited!!  We hope you had a great week!  Thanks for tagging along with us!

Unit 32

Second Grade Segments
~~~~~~~~~
HOD's Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory - Unit 32
~~~~~~~~~
It's been a very lazy week.  I have very few pictures.
~~~~~~~~~
Bible verse:
Proverbs 18:24
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
**Thank you, Lord Jesus, for that promise!**
Bible Study:
Psalm 121:1-8
God is always watching over us.  Always.  He doesn't grow weary.  He doesn't sleep.  We can always trust that He is there to help us.  It's a promise.  Always.
~~~~~~~~~
Math:
We have been very light on the math this week trying to make it stretch.  (and being lazy)
We have 10 lessons to go!
~~~~~~~~~
History:
We learned about the California Trail.  We added it to our timeline.
We learned about a girl named Nell whose family had traveled west on the Oregon Trail.  She lived in a log cabin with her family. She had to take care of her baby brothers while her father took her sick mother to the nearest town.  She fell asleep with the door open and a bear entered her home!  Her little brothers thought the bear was a dog. He wanted molasses.  Nell threw a jar of molasses outside.  Later, she shot the bear from a window!
We also read about a boy named Ken who traveled to California by stagecoach. His father had gone before him to look for gold. During that time, California had become the 31st state!
We also learned about blacksmiths.
We also created a population bar graph on the floor with masking tape, but I forgot to snap a photo.
~~~~~~~~~
Geography:
We read about the route of the Oregon Trail and traced it on a map.
~~~~~~~~~
Science:
God made black bears!  They can be 10 feet tall and weigh 1700 lbs.  I taped T's thumbs to the palms of her hands to be "paws".  She tried to pick up different objects with her paws.  Some were harder than others.  But that wasn't all.  She had bear paws for an hour.  She even got dressed and ate lunch with her "paws".  She's pretty good at being a bear. ;)
God created gold!  Gold is a mineral.  It does not rust!
~~~~~~~~~
Spelling:
We have color words this week.  Irelynn scored 100% on her spelling test.
~~~~~~~~~
Reading:
T finished reading The Bears on Hemlock Mountain and is now reading...
~~~~~~~~~
Artistic Expression:
~~~~~~~~~
Language Arts:
We did a few lessons from R&S English 2.
~~~~~~~~~
Poetry/Copywork:
We read the poem A Child's Prayer but did no copywork.

Unit 31

Second Grade Segments

~~~~~~~~~
Heart of Dakota - Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory - Unit 31
~~~~~~~~~

 Isn't God good?  This is our flower garden in our back yard starting to get pretty. :)  We are ever so thankful for the blessings God showers us with!

Here is the Scrump enjoying the tulips a little too much!

~~~~~~~~~
Bible verse:
Matthew 6:25-26
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?  26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?
(T did a great job remembering most of this verse by Friday!)
We studied Luke 12:22-34
Jesus does not want you to be afraid or to worry.  What He does want is for us to trust in God that He will take care of us.  He wants our hearts to be seeking the kingdom of God instead of any earthly treasure.
~~~~~~~~~

History:

We are reading about the Santa Fe Trail, The Oregon Trail and The California Trail.

~~~~~~~~~
Poetry/Copywork:
Such a fun poem.  We love homophones!  Even B enjoyed this poem and kept trying to recite some of it.
~~~~~~~~~

Science:

God made the insects and arachnids!

We learned the parts of a spider...

...and the parts of an insect.

~ ~ ~

We also learned about "push" and "pull".

~~~~~~~~~
Spelling:
Review week!
~~~~~~~~~

Reading:

I'm kinda stumped at why the readings are so short in this book.  Some of the chapters are 2-3 pages long.  T is thoroughly enjoying this book and easily answers comprehension questions.

~~~~~~~~~
Math:
There hasn't really been a lot of new concepts this week.  We did learn about rounding to the nearest dollar, but when I tried to show T, she already understood it - sort of like it was already programmed in her brain...
We also learned to add dollars and cents with proper placement of the decimal point.
~~~~~~~~~

Artistic expression:

~Treasure chest referencing Luke 12:34~

And something for fun...T draws animals on a daily basis....she wanted me to take a picture of this.

~~~~~~~~~
We usually spread our day out fairly well.  The kids wake up on their own anywhere between 8 and 10 am.  They watch a little TV, eat breakfast, play a little, clean up, and we try to start working by 10.  Some days we don't start until 11!
This is the usual order in which we do our studies:
Bible (always first)
History/Geography
Math
Exercise Card
Poetry/Copywork
~Lunch - right around noon~
Reading
Science
Language Arts
Spelling
Storytime
Art is usually last because it's the fun, messier stuff, and Mommy tries to focus on the more important subjects before the fun stuff.  Sometimes it is right after our History lesson.
Some of our days are longer than others depending on how much time we take with each lesson. On a really good day, we can be finished in 1.5-2 hours.  We have also been known to go from 9:00 AM until 3:30-4:00 PM with a ton of crazy breaks in between. (We aren't fond of those days.)
On short days Turkey is bored!  She says schoolwork keeps her from being bored!  I second that! :)
Thank you for tagging along!
Unit 30
Second Grade Segments
~~~~~~~~~

Heart of Dakota - Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory - Unit 30

~~~~~~~~~
Bible Study:
We reviewed our verses from the past few weeks.  T recalled them very well with just a little prompting!  On Friday we studied Matthew 25:31-46.
We discussed this passage for quite a while, but here was the end of our conversation:
Mommy:  "Christians need to be different from the world.  When we show the love of Jesus, it shows that we love Jesus."
T:  "I get it.  When we help OTHER people, we are doing it for Jesus.  When I get older, I'll understand that."
~~~~~~~~~

Science:

 Did you know in 1870 there were 5.5 million bison (American buffalo) in America?  15 years later there were only 1500.  We learned about bison and other bovids, like deer and moose.

We learned about vultures and how drafts of warm air help to lift them into the sky.  We got an idea of how they fly by bending an index card and blowing under it.  It was pretty cool to see it glide!

We also learned the parts of a bird's body and about birds that hunt, like the eagle.

~~~~~~~~~
History/Geography:
We practiced singing "America the Beautiful"
We learned how pioneers traveled in covered wagons and the hardships they faced.
The pioneers crossed the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers as they traveled West.  We located these rivers on a map.
Did you know they took the wheels off the wagons to cross rivers and the wagons floated like boats?
God sent two friendly Indians to help the pioneers when they lost their trail in the mountains!
We added "Oregon Trail" to our timeline.
Reading:
T finished Animal Adventures and started reading:
Front Cover
~~~~~~~~~

Math:

Lots of review this week.  We are multiplying and dividing by fives.

~~~~~~~~~
Language Arts:
We finished over half our CLE workbooks.  Mommy decided on lighter work this week, so we are using Rod and Staff English 2 and working on answering questions using the same words that are asked.
Where is the dog?
The dog is in the doghouse.
We are also working on past and present tense.
Photo: My little beauty. :) #homeschool #english #homeschooling #homeschool
~~~~~~~~~

Storytime:

We have been reading from the genre realistic fiction.
This is a great book.  T and I pretended to be blind like the boy in the book.  He was taught how to walk around his house holding his right arm down, palm out and putting his left arm at his chest for protection.  He had to learn how to locate things in his house by pretending he is the center of a clock.  We stood in the middle of our living room and learned the windows are at 12:00.  The TV is at 1:00.  The pocket doors are at 3:00.  The big comfy chair is at 4-5:00.  The entry to the dining room is at 6:00.  The sofa is at 9:00.

~~~~~~~~~
Poetry/Copywork
Written in March by Henry Wordsworth
~~~~~~~~~

Spelling:

We focused on words with 'oi' and 'oy'.  We tried to remember oi comes in the middle of a word while oy comes at the end of a word.
T scored 100% on her spelling test at the end of the week.

~~~~~~~~~
Only 4 units to go!  We had a wonderful week and we hope you did, too!  Thank you for tagging along.
Heart of Dakota - Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory - Unit 29 Review
~~~~~~~~~

Bible verse:

Deuteronomy 5:16
Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

We have talked a lot this week about what it means to be obedient and that it pleases God when you honor your parents.  When you are obedient to your parents, you are obeying God.

~~~~~~~~~
History:
 We loved learning about flatboats and added that to our timeline.
Artistic Expression:
T made a hornbook similar to what the young pioneer children would use to learn their alphabet in school.
~~~~~~~~~

Math:

We continue with Abeka grade 2.  T is learning multiplication x5.

T scored a 97% on her math test this week, although Mommy doesn't count scores really at all.  It's nice to see how much we remember.  Sometimes we make little mistakes like forgetting to check our work.  We are working on that. :)

~~~~~~~~~
Spelling:
~~~~~~~~~

Science:

God made the moon!  God made the fruit trees and all its parts!
