Unit 21

SECOND GRADE SEGMENTS

~~~~~~~~~
Heart of Dakota ~ *Beyond* Unit 21 Review
(Just some of what we have been working on this week.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Bible:

WHATEVER!!

Philippians 4:8

Finally brothers

(photo from google)
We decided this gives a whole new positive meaning to saying, "Whatever!"  So anytime we hear (or say...because it does happen) this, hopefully it is God's word we will meditate on.  How cool is that?

Our Bible study was Philippians 4:4-13
Paul knew Jesus was always with him.  That made him joyful even in bad times. Paul prayed about everything.  Just like Paul, the pioneers trusted God and prayed about everything.  This helped them get through hard times.

Reading:

One of the things we learned this week was "metamorphosis".  It's kinda gross but super cool!

We also watched sped-up metamorphosis on youtube.  We watched the life cycle of a butterfly and a mosquito.

We love the nature reader!  Bugs are disgustingly interesting!

How sweet is this?

Spelling:

Math:  We started learning multiplication tables this week.  We practiced factors 0, 1 and 2.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Science:
We learned about different bird beaks and how they are used.  The tools on the right/bottom are our different "beaks" while the different foods on the plate represent the different types of foods birds eat.
We also learned about different types of clouds and which clouds are a sign of rainy weather.  We also watched a video of this on youtube.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

History:

We learned how Indians made canoes.  We learned about Fort Detroit and French Pioneers.

We added 1701 to our timeline - the French settled Detroit.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Artistic Expression:
Homemade "clay".  Mix together equal parts salt and flour, then slowly add water and knead until it feels and looks like clay.  Eas-ay!
T made a canoe "like" the Indians.
(Daddy made a bird sitting next to the canoe.)
Finished canoe:
We also played with a LOT of play doh this week.  Below are a couple of the things T made.  :)
Storytime:
We still have 2 chapters left of  "The Railway Children", but we were introduced to a new genre in this unit.
We have read the first 2 chapters in the nonfiction book, "Pagoo".
This book is about tide pool life, focused around the story of a hermit crab named Pagoo.
