Unit 27

Second Grade Segments

HOD - Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory - Unit 27 Review

~~~~~~~~~
Bible:
We should care a lot about all the little things God gives us.  This is how we show God we can be trusted with the big things!
~~~~~~~~~

Bible Study:

Luke 16:10-15

God sees your heart even if others cannot.  He knows who you serve.  We should always be putting Him first.  We need to serve him instead of money.

Do we hold onto our money like it is more important than anything else?  If God shows us a need, are we meeting it for others by sharing what we have?

History:

We learned about a little girl named Betsy who lived in Salisbury, North Carolina. She was to be a flower girl in a parade to welcome President Washington. Her mother told her she had to stay home to care for her grandmother instead.  She was very disappointed that she couldn't be a flower girl in the parade but she needed to be obedient to her mother.  President Washington visited her while she was in charge of the house.  Betsy was polite and served him cornbread and milk.  She didn't know until later that he was her guest.  What a blessing God gave her for obeying her mother!

We were supposed to make cornbread to go with this activity.  We didn't have any cornmeal. T made a batch of cookies this week instead, with no help at all!

Math:

We are working on multiplication tables x4.
We also learned about rounding to the nearest 10.

Poetry/Copywork

"Pippa's Song" by Robert Browning is the poem for this unit.
We noticed that each line contains a contraction. :)

The year's at the spring,
And day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearled;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn;
God's in his Heaven --
All's right with the world!

We wondered who Pippa was, so we googled this poem.  It is said that Pippa was a little girl that worked in a silk factory in the town of Asolo.  She would sing a song that touched Robert Browning's heart, so he wrote about it.

Science:

We learned about the 6th day of Creation when God created animals and man.  Animals were not made to worship God, but man was.  We are to care for the animals.  T drew a picture to show herself with her pet cat, Giddy.  She was showing how she could take care of him by giving him food and water.

T also pretended to live on a farm where she had to care for animals.
~~~~~~~~~
Geography:
George Washington's home home was Mt. Vernon.  He lived at Mansion House Farm on the Potomac River.  T drew a map of his home.
~~~~~~~~~

Language Arts:

We are continuing CLE LA2 at about 1/2 lesson per day.  T also did a bit of creative writing.  She had to try to guess the ending of a story and write it herself.

~~~~~~~~~
Reading:
T finished reading Tornado.  Her comprehension improves daily!
Storytime:
We are still enjoying The House At Pooh Corner.  This week we focused on the Godly character trait:  joy.  We also focused on the story element:  cause and effect.
Be*cause* Tigger coughed right behind Eeyore, he pushed Eeyore into the river!
Be*cause* Eeyore was pushed into the river, he got very wet!
