SECOND GRADE SEGMENTS
~~~~~~~~~
Bible:
John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
We are focusing on making sacrifices. Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us. Who else would leave his throne and die for a world and all its sinners? No sacrifice can compare to what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has done for us. If we love the Lord, we should be willing to make even the tiniest of sacrifices to glorify Him.
This week T was waiting for dinner to finish so she could eat a cookie. B really wanted a cookie, but there weren't any left. Even though he had already had one, T gave her cookie to him.
~~Small Sacrifice~~
Bible Study:
We studied Ephesians 6:10-20
Paul tells Christians how we can be brave in the fight against evil. We need to trust in the Lord and his power. Put on the full armor of God! When we are scared, we can trust God to protect us.
Artistic Expression:
T's interpretation of the "Full Armor of God"
When we spoke about God's armor not being "real" clothing, T took it literally. You can be nude and still be wearing the full armor of God. :)
T also painted a picture with Q-tips.
(not HOD related)
Storytime:
Humor - includes stories, jokes, or poems that cause laughter and are very entertaining.
We started a new genre in this unit. Mommy chose "The House At Pooh Corner". To introduce the genre, we wrote short alliterations using our names.
My mommy miraculously munched a million mini marshmallows.
"I" itches ivy in its icky intense itchiness.
T wanted to make sure to include B along with us. :)
(We realize his names starts with an E but is the sound of A, so T went with it.)
B ate apples all around America and Antarctica.
We discussed the character trait "joyfulness" and decided Eeyore needs prayer for a more joyful heart. We think Tigger is bouncy and joyful. :)
We introduced the story element: cause and effect
We practiced retelling parts of the story.
~~~~~~~~~
Poetry/Copywork
We are not starting cursive until next school year. Itchy T has been interested in it and wants so terribly to be able to write out her name in cursive, so we have been working on that.
A Child's Prayer by Margaret Betham-Edwards is our poem for copywork in this unit.
~~~~~~~~~
Language Arts
Ownership nouns, singular and plural nouns, correct punctuation and describing words are just a few of the things T has been working on in this unit.
~~~~~~~~~
History:
Richard was 10 years old when he signed up to march with the Continental Army. He played the fife for the troops. He and his colonel were captured by the British army. He had a fist fight with a boy, but even though he was weak and tired, Richard fought with bravery. Because of his bravery, the British officer let Richard and his colonel go free!
Levi (below) was a young boy who fought at Lexington and Bunker Hill. He was chosen to watch over General Washington's bodyguards.
General George Washington set a good example of serving others, showing he was never too great to help those in need.

Geography:
Sites of the American victories during the Revolutionary War.
~~~~~~~~~
Science:
God made our ears!
We learned about the outer, middle and inner ear and how we hear. T was to make a list of different sounds she heard, circle the pleasant sounds and put an X on the sounds she would consider "noise".
Some of the sounds she listed:
PLEASANT:
fire crackling
baby drinking his bottle
squishing of B's discovery bag
NOISE:
B
paper crinkling
Henley
mouse clicking
~ ~ ~ ~
What else did we learn?
God made our noses and tongues!
They work together to help us taste!
~~~~~~~~~
Reading:
We are learning so many interesting facts about insects while T reads aloud. Did you know hawkmoths sometimes get mistaken for hummingbirds? A hawkmoth is also known as a tomato worm because its life starts out on a tomato vine.
~~~~~~~~~
Spelling:
Words with long 'o' spelled 'ow' as in 'grow'.
grow
show
tow
throw
stow
bow
flow
glow
*most
*goes
We have needed to work more on alphabetizing, so that is one of the things Mommy had T do with her spelling word list.
~~~~~~~~~
Math:
An ornithologist is someone who studies birds. :)
Yes, we learned this in math.
We are also working on thirds and lots of review this week.
T also did extra multiplication, speed drills, flash cards and www.xtramath.org.
Thank you for tagging along with us in this unit!
We hope you had a wonderful week!
