SECOND GRADE SEGMENTS
Heart of Dakota - Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory - Unit 10 Review (and more)
This is Turkey. She is 7 and in second grade. She loves drawing, playing soccer and pretending to be a dog or some type of animal almost daily. She is full of energy and such a joy to our family. T is using HOD's "Beyond" this year and loves it!
~~~Here's what we did this week!~~~
We also read Psalm 40:1-3 about David waiting patiently for the Lord and God heard him. We talked about how hard it is to be patient and to wait for things but that God is so good and knows what is best for us!
History: We have been reading Stories of the Pilgrims.
This week we read about the pilgrims looking for a good place to build their homes and a young boy named Francis who got into mischief with some gun powder and a musket, putting his boat in danger. This is a picture of Francis in the middle of his explosion on the boat. This was Turkey's "artistic expression" to go with her History lesson.
We also did a little Geography and learned a few facts about Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
Turkey also does a worksheet each week on what she learned in History.
For Poetry we read "What Are Heavy?" by Christina Georgina Rossetti. We reviewed the poem each day, adding motions to the lines, cutting the poem apart and reconstructing it, and adding pictures. We also do copywork with our poetry. This is not my daughter's favorite thing to do, so I usually set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and have her show me her neatest work.
Math: We use Abeka 2nd grade math and have worked through lesson 51. This week my daughter impressed me by solving a certain word problem orally with no help.
We review Time, Money, Addition and Subtraction Families, do speed drills, flash cards and so much more on a daily basis.
Science: God's Wonderful Works.
We learned the water cycle and also learned about land under the ocean. We did 2 experiments this week. One was about the water cycle, using a ziplock bag and colored water. We taped the bag to a window. A cloud formed above our water, then soon the water ran down the inside of the bag, raining. :)
We also did an experiment learning about fresh water. We learned how amazing God is that when sea water evaporates into the air, filling the clouds for our rain, the salt from it stays in the ocean! He was smart to be able to give us fresh water over and over again! Using a glass full of fresh water, a crayon and some salt, we learned a crayon will not float in fresh water but it will float if you add salt to the water. God put a lot of salt in sea water to help boats float better!
Spelling: Our list reviewed long 'i' words formed with final silent 'e'. I use Spellingcity.com for games and worksheets, plus other worksheets from our school district.
Reading: Turkey got a kick out of reading "Owl at Home". She did very well with the comprehension questions listed in the HOD manual.
Sometimes T reads in a little "book nook" we make behind our large recliner. She really enjoys this!
I also read aloud a few chapters of the historical fiction "Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. T narrated portions of the story back to me. One day we took turns. She also drew a picture this week comparing the setting of the story to where she lives. We also worked on what happens "first", "next", "then" and "last".
While I read, T loves to draw pictures of what she imagines life was like for Laura and her family.
We use a timeline weekly. This week we learned a little more about timelines, then T made a small one about her life.
We are also using Draw Write Now for more penmanship/copywork and Art. T loves the drawing and coloring part, but not the copywork. :)
Daily we pledge to the American flag...
...check the temperature outside...
...and mark the weather on our bulletin board.
And that was our homeschool week with Heart of Dakota curriculum. :)
Meet the rest of our family!
This is me with my hubby. He is the most selfless man I know. He is also afraid of zombies. (shhh!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is Sarcasmo. He is 20 years old, witty, and is in his third year of college. Right now his major is chemistry. He loves almost all sports and his Xbox. Recently he has taken a liking to politics. :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is Piglet. She is 18, full of laughter, and is a freshman in college. She LOVES any and all things Korean. She even started a Korean club at college. She hopes one day to teach English in Korea.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is Mr. Guggle Buggle. He is 3 years old and loves matchbox cars and puzzles. He is a hungry learner and has a bright personality as well as a bright mind. He is regularly putting others first, which surprises me for a 3 year old. (Oh and he also throws tantrums.) Bug was diagnosed with Ocular Albinism when he was almost 3 months old. A year later there were no signs of OA. I believe God completely healed this child's eyes! Miracles are real!
Bug sorting colors...
...tracing...
...and working on a letter maze.

Meet Scrump, Baby Bear, Teensy Tot, etc. He is 9 months old and loves crawling, eating everything off the floor and playing in the dirty dishes of the dishwasher. He also loves to play pat-a-cake, pull the cat's tail and laugh at his siblings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lastly is G. He is almost 2 years old, loves all people, but he'll bite you to let you know just how much he cares. He doesn't know he's a cat. He likes to chase the kids and BE chased by the kids. He also really likes pool noodles.
God bless!
Looks like a fun and busy week! I love the reading nook. :) I just love the names of your children! :) Welcome to HOD!
