Unit 17

SECOND GRADE SEGMENTS

~~~~~~~~~
Happy New Year!  Here is what we did this week:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bible: our verse for this unit
We also studied I Peter 5:5-11.  There is hope for people who are suffering.  God is stronger than any evil in the world.  Isaac and Joseph (from our History lesson) felt afraid and alone, but God had his mighty hand over them!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
History:
We read about two little boys named Isaac and Joseph.  They were taken captive by some Indians.  The boys hoped that someone would save them.
They learned to make corn meal, hunt, shoot a gun and much more.
 God was watching out for them and when the boys had a chance, they escaped!
We did a History activity and sent T on a short journey from the back porch (laundry room) to our living room.  She tiptoed to her destination and Mommy would roar like a lion.  When Mommy roared, she had to stop and recite her Bible verse. (This happened several times.) When she reached the living room, she said a prayer to God thanking him for keeping her safe.  We repeated this activity while T hopped to her destination.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Math:

We had 2 countries left to visit in math.  Jamaica was one of them.

We learned to borrow from tens and hundreds.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Copywork:
"Evening" was our poem in this unit.  T copied 3 verses of this poem, acted the poem out with motions and drew pictures to go with it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Storytime:
Mommy is reading aloud "The Railway Children".  There are an awful lot of words in this book that we need to look up in the dictionary! :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reading:
T finished "Prairie School" and is now reading "First Flight, The Story of Tom Tate and the Wright Brothers".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Language Arts:

We only did one lesson from CLE this week.  T also wrote out the days of the week, again focusing on proper nouns.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spelling:
star
start
part
jar
dark
yard
garden
farther
apart
large
This week we did spelling words 3x each, used each word in a sentence orally, did triangle and rainbow writing, then T took her test Friday.
Even though T orally spelled farther correctly, she got it wrong on her spelling test.  The rest were correct.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Geography:

T made a model of a river bed and labeled the mouth, source, bed and bank with strips of paper.  Before Mommy could snap a photo, it was torn apart. :(

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Science:
We studied the scales of a fish and how they mirror their surroundings.  T took her "foil fish" around the house to see what it would look like against different items.  Here it is mirroring her pencil box.
We also studied the light God made and how it changes when you are close to it or far away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Artistic Expression:

Mommy read a paragraph from our History lesson this week.  It was about a sunset on a lake.  T had to use the description to show the setting by painting a picture.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bug worked on cutting, drawing lines, tracing his name and tracing triangles this week.  He also loves to put puzzles together all by himself. :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had a great week, but it was condensed into 4 days.  T has math homework to complete over the weekend due to our short week.  Mommy thinks that's funny. (homeschool...homework...) :)  We hope you had an awesome week!
